The 2026 colour forecasts landed on the same idea from three directions: walls go back to a soft, warm white, and one considered thing on that wall carries the room. In an Australian nursery that thing is usually native botanical, in gum leaf green with a little gum blossom pink. Here is the palette, the Tiny Walls pieces that make the wall, and six pieces from other Australian makers.
Nothing dates a nursery faster than a scheme decided by a theme. You pick jungle, and eighteen months later the room reads as a phase. What a year of colour forecasting has quietly been saying is that the way out is not a better theme. It is a calmer wall with one thing on it you chose.
Three forecasts got there independently. Pantone named Cloud Dancer, a soft off-white, its Colour of the Year, the first time it has ever picked a white. Dulux's 2026 Colour Forecast built one of its three palettes, Ethereal, from gentle greens, mauves and blush pinks. And Australian kids' interiors writing spent the year making the same case: warm neutrals instead of cold white and grey, eucalyptus and clay instead of primary colour, rooms that grow rather than get redone.
Why the wall has to work harder now
If the walls are soft white and the furniture is timber, there is little left to carry the room. Milan made that explicit: trend writing out of Salone del Mobile described walls treated as architectural features rather than backgrounds. At Maison&Objet in September, the same instinct showed up as texture: warm neutrals, hand-knotted rugs, felted wool wall hangings.
Australian parents are already searching for the domestic version. Pinterest's Australian parenting trend report for 2026 has "interactive wall for kids" up 265 per cent and "wild animals activities for kids" up 170 per cent.
The store says the same. Over the last ninety days, the top five wall pieces here by revenue were all native: gum tree and bird, the bush bundle, gum tree and koala, the gum tree alone, and the green grass trim. Not dinosaurs. Gum trees.
The palette, in four parts
1. A warm white, not a cold one
The foundation, and the part people get wrong. A blue-white wall pulls the grey out of watercolour botanicals and makes timber look orange. A warm, chalky white does the opposite. Bauwerk Colour, a Western Australian limewash maker, sells a 250ml tester at A$17.50, enough for a real patch in your own light.
2. Gum leaf green
Not sage, which reads grey, and not forest, which reads heavy. The green in a gum canopy is soft, slightly blue, slightly silver. It is the green Dulux's Ethereal palette circles, and it works as the only colour in the room.
3. Gum blossom pink, in very small doses
A clay or blossom pink on one textile and nowhere else stops the green and white reading clinical. Treat it as seasoning.
4. Timber and woven texture
Jute, cane, wool, birch. This is what Maison&Objet was shouting about, and what keeps a pale room from feeling like a waiting area.
The wall itself

Bauwerk Colour limewash, from A$17.50 for a 250ml tester. The company is based in Western Australia. It gives a chalky, uneven surface a flat acrylic cannot, which is the texture the 2026 forecasts keep pointing at.
How to use this
Start with the wall behind the cot and leave the other three alone. That is the biggest difference between a room that reads considered and one that reads busy. Keep the walls warm white, put one gum tree beside the cot rather than over it, and scatter gum nuts and leaves across the upper third.
Then stop. Add the quilt, one basket, and the rug you already own. If it still feels thin in three weeks, the grass trim along the skirting is the cheapest next move at A$18 a mini panel.

What white should I paint a nursery if I am using green decals?
A warm white rather than a blue-based one. Blue-whites pull the grey out of watercolour greens and make timber look orange. Test a patch on the wall and look at it morning and night before committing.
Will a green and white nursery still work when my child is five?
The main reason people choose botanical over a themed room. A gum tree is not a character, so there is nothing to outgrow. When we ask customers what they were after, the phrase that comes back is "something that will grow with her".
Do the walls need to be freshly painted first?
Not freshly, but fabric decals go up easiest on clean, sound, non-chalky paint. If your walls are old, chalky or textured, put a test piece up for 48 hours before ordering a full set.
How big should the gum tree be next to a cot?
The medium at 1.5m tall with a 93cm canopy suits a standard cot wall. The large at 1.8m and extra large at 2.1m are for taller ceilings, or when the tree is the only thing on the wall.
Can I put decals above the cot?
Our decals are printed on fabric and sit flat against the wall rather than hanging from it. Many parents still prefer the larger pieces beside the cot rather than above it, so the baby has something to look at from where they lie.
