It started with one bare wall.
I'm Clara, mum of two and the founder of Tiny Walls.
When my kids were little and I was setting up their rooms, I had a picture in my head: a soft, calm room they'd remember growing up in. The kind you'd happily sit in at 3am with a baby on your shoulder.
What I actually had was a bare white wall, a phone full of Pinterest boards and a basket of décor that didn't go together.
I looked at every option. A painted mural cost thousands. A painter meant fumes and a room we couldn't use for days. And every wall sticker I found was shiny plastic that looked exactly like what it was.
So I asked a different question. What if real art could go on the wall as easily as a sticker, but look like it had been painted there?
Every design starts as a painting.
Before anything is printed, our in-house artist paints it by hand in watercolour: koalas and kookaburras, gum trees, monster trucks, dinosaurs, peonies and rainbows.
That's why every piece has real brushstrokes, soft edges and colours that blend into each other the way paint does. It's art first, and a decal second.
Then we print it here in Melbourne.
We print each painting on thick matte fabric, not vinyl, then cut it and pack it ourselves in our warehouse in Broadmeadows. No overseas factory, no outsourced printer.
Because the fabric has no shine and no white border, the brushstrokes stay soft and the colours look like paint. It's the thing customers write to us about most. As one put it: "my family even thought they were hand painted on the walls by an artist!!"
A whole wall can go up in an afternoon. Some parents do it during a nap.
Still a family business
Tiny Walls is family-owned. I started it when my kids were young, and their bedrooms were the first walls we ever decorated. They've grown up since, and today they both work in the business with me.
Since 2019, more than 30,000 Australian families have put our art on their walls. Nurseries finished just before a due date. Big-kid rooms full of trucks and daisies. Birthday makeovers done the night before. A lounge-room corner for the grandkids.
My favourite message is still the one from a mum whose little boy named the animals on his wall. He says good morning and goodnight to them every day.
That's the whole point. A room that feels like theirs, that can grow up with them, with no repainting when they move on from koalas to dinosaurs.
We'll always be straight with you about what our decals can and can't do. Every order comes with a free test piece so you can see how your wall behaves first. And if you're stuck on where to start, email a photo of your wall to hello@tinywalls.com.au. We'll help you plan it.
